Explore the Tools That Work

As an English teacher, I’ve tested dozens of apps and resources over the years—some great, some not so much. I’ve always been curious to see which tools genuinely help learners improve their English and stay motivated.

In this section, I share my personal favorites, the ones I’ve recommended to my own students and even used in my own lessons. Whether you’re looking for grammar support, listening practice, or vocabulary builders, you’ll find honest, practical suggestions here to make your study time more effective and enjoyable.

Practice & Skills Development

Quizlet

Quizlet is a great tool for building vocabulary and testing yourself with flashcards. You
can use ready-made sets or create your own based on what you’re learning. I love how
interactive it is — you can match words, do quick tests, and play games to help you
remember everything. It’s especially useful for learning IELTS or TOEFL academic
words.

Anki

Anki is one of the best flashcard tools out there for serious learners. What I love about
it is its smart repetition system, it shows you cards just before you’re about to forget
them, which makes your studying super efficient. It’s especially helpful for memorizing
vocabulary, grammar rules, or academic phrases for IELTS and TOEFL. You can even
download shared decks made by other learners or teachers.

Grammarly

Grammarly helps you write more clearly and correctly. Whether you’re doing homework,
writing emails, or preparing for the IELTS or TOEFL writing tasks, Grammarly checks
your grammar, spelling, and sentence structure. I recommend it for building awareness
of your writing mistakes and improving over time.

BBC Learning English

This app offers short, easy-to-understand lessons in grammar, vocabulary, and
pronunciation. It also has listening practice using real-world English from the news and
other topics. I like it because it’s simple, reliable, and perfect for daily practice — even
just 10 minutes a day can make a difference.

Test Preparation

Magoosh

Magoosh offers professional IELTS and TOEFL preparation, with lots of practice
questions, video explanations, and study schedules. It’s great for focused learning. I
like it because it gives clear guidance on how to approach every part of the test — and
you can track your progress too.

BestMyTest

BestMyTest is a powerful platform specifically designed for TOEFL and IELTS
preparation. What I like most is how detailed and exam-like the practice materials are,
especially for TOEFL. It includes speaking and writing samples with model answers,
and even AI scoring and feedback to help you track your progress. It’s a great tool if
you want to simulate real test conditions and improve your weak areas with focused
practice.

My Free Practices (IELTS & TOEFL)

BestMyTest is a powerful platform specifically designed for TOEFL and IELTS
preparation. What I like most is how detailed and exam-like the practice materials are,
especially for TOEFL. It includes speaking and writing samples with model answers,
and even AI scoring and feedback to help you track your progress. It’s a great tool if
you want to simulate real test conditions and improve your weak areas with focused
practice.

Daily Immersion & Habits

Duolingo

Duolingo is a fun and friendly app that helps you learn English step by step. It uses
short lessons, games, and reminders to keep you motivated. I like recommending this
to beginners or students who want to practice casually every day.

English Podcasts

There are thousands of podcasts for English learners — some slow and clear, some
natural and fast. Listening to podcasts builds your ear for English and helps you
improve your comprehension skills. I usually tell students to choose one they enjoy and
listen while doing daily tasks, like commuting or exercising.

YouTube Channels (ESLJason)

YouTube has so many great channels that teach English in fun and useful ways. You
can find grammar explanations, vocabulary videos, mock speaking tests, and even
IELTS and TOEFL exam guides. I use YouTube a lot to help students connect with
English in a way that feels modern and personal.

Preply (My Personal Favourite)

Preply is one of the best platforms out there — if you find the right teacher.

With the right guidance, 1:1 lessons can completely transform your exam preparation. That’s
exactly where I teach, and I’ve helped countless students improve their IELTS and TOEFL
scores through focused, personalized support. Whether you’re looking for structure, strategy,
or just someone to guide you through your weak points, Preply can make a huge difference.

Or, if you prefer a more flexible option, you can also join one of my webinars.
